DIFI participated on in the 5th Budapest Demographic Summit in Hungary
Aimed to take stock of the various changes on the Arab Family brought about by population and demographic dynamics, and to assess the policy implications of these changes.
The seminar brought together international, regional and national population scientists, policy-makers and researchers involved in the study of aspects of the Arab family.DIFI organized a half-day High Level Policy Dialogue in collaboration with the General Secretariat for Development Planning (GSDP) in the State of Qatar on the Impact of Population Dynamics on the Arab Family on 2 December 2013, followed by a one-day International Research Seminar on the Impact of Population Dynamics on the Arab Family on 3 December.
Context
The structure of the Arab family, which is the basis of Arab societies and the most influential educator and inculcator of values, is in the midst of transition. Modernization and globalization processes, including internet usage and social media which have shrunk the world in time and space, and humanitarian crises, as well as rapidly changing population and demographic dynamics, are fundamentally altering the traditional Arab family.
High Level Policy Dialogue
The main aim of the high level policy dialogue was to consider the impact of population dynamics on the Arab family and the policy implications.
The dialogue featured a key-note address and a moderated panel discussion on five selected themes related to Arab families: (i) Marriage and Family Formation; (ii) Trends and Patterns in Fertility and Family Size; (iii) Population Migration and the Family; (iv) Adolescents and the Family and, (v) Intergenerational and Gender Issues Affecting Family Cohesion. As part of the panel discussion there was a question and answer session, including twitters and tweets.
International Research Seminar
The main aim of the international research seminar was to present original high-quality research papers on the Arab family that will lead to an edited book on the Impact of Population Dynamics on the Arab Family. The international seminar addressed five main topics related to Arab families: (i) Marriage and Family Formation; (ii) Trends and Patterns in Fertility and Family Size; (iii) Population Migration and the Family; (iv) Adolescents and the Family and, (v) Intergenerational and Gender Issues Affecting Family Cohesion.
